Margherita Steward is a ceramic artist whose journey began with a formal education in figurative arts at the Art High School in Giussano, where she developed a strong foundation in form, proportion, and visual sensitivity. Her path with clay started to take shape in 2017 in South Africa, where her first lessons on the wheel sparked a deep connection with ceramics.

In 2020, she attended an intensive three-month course at La Meridiana School of Ceramics in Tuscany, studying with Sandy Lockwood and Franco Rampi. There, she refined her technical control on the wheel and deepened her knowledge of high-temperature stoneware and porcelain, as well as electric, gas, and wood firings. The following year, she expanded her expertise through a glaze course with Eve Carrobourc, gaining the skills to formulate and produce glazes independently.

In 2021, Margherita established her personal project, Mast Ceramics, marking the beginning of her independent artistic research. Alongside her ceramic practice, her experience working in the hospitality industry in 2022 brought her closer to the world of restaurants and cocktail culture, inspiring her to create handcrafted glasses and goblets designed specifically for mixology.

Her approach is rooted primarily in wheel-thrown production using high-temperature stoneware, fired in an electric kiln. She favors enhancing the natural tones of clay through transparent crystalline glazes, both glossy and matte, deliberately avoiding colored glazes to keep her focus on the material itself and to maintain a conscious production process. Her research revolves around clay: she is drawn to rough, tactile surfaces, the interplay of contrasts, and forms inspired by nature. In addition to wheel-throwing, she explores slab construction and the nerikomi technique.

Defined by a minimal aesthetic, Margherita’s work is modern and experimental, guided by balance, texture, and material honesty. Recently entering the world of bonsai, she brings a contemporary sensibility to her vessels, creating pots that harmonize with the tree while expressing a distinct and refined artistic identity.
