Mauro’s Heritage

Mauro’s Heritage is more than a bonsai collection: it is the living legacy of an Italian artist who dedicated his life to trees, cultivating them with passion, solitude, and love.

Mauro’s work centered on native and alpine species such as Pinus sylvestris, Pinus mugo, Fagus sylvatica, Acer campestre, and Picea abies. In the 1980s, when bonsai in Europe largely meant Japanese imports, his choice to collect and cultivate local material was both unconventional and visionary. These trees are not only beautiful examples of bonsai, they are also milestones in the history of Italian bonsai, representing a time when working with native species was still a pioneering act.

Our story with Mauro began only a year ago, when we had the privilege to meet him and spend time among his trees. From the very beginning, we discovered how much we shared, values, thoughts about bonsai, and a way of living in close connection with nature. Mauro was incredibly generous in spirit: he loved to share his little tricks, the stories of how he found each tree, and his reflections on the future of his collection. His passion was humble but profound, and it was impossible not to be inspired by his dedication.

The trees themselves are something truly special. At first sight, you immediately sense that they are different from what you usually see in a garden or nursery. Being entirely self-taught, Mauro did not conform to the Japanese dome-shaped style of bonsai. Instead, his trees reflect the landscapes he knew, they look like the trees he saw in nature, often breaking away from the parameters dictated by bonsai tradition. This makes them exceptional raw material for passionate artists: they carry maturity, girth, and strong nebari that have developed naturally over decades, as well as ancient-looking jin and shari that only time can create. They are perfect for those who want to own a truly old piece that still leaves space for personal styling, combining authentic age with creative potential.

When Mauro passed away in the fall of 2025, his family entrusted us with his collection so that it could continue to be cared for and appreciated. This responsibility is both an honor and a commitment: to preserve the memory of a man, his passion for bonsai, and the values he embodied.

This collection is a tribute to him. Each tree carries not only the marks of decades of cultivation, but also the heritage of Mauro’s vision, his curiosity, and his willingness to pass on his knowledge. In sharing them, we hope to keep his voice alive and to inspire others, just as Mauro inspired us.
