Some trees carry more than just beauty—they carry history. This Pyracantha coccinea, over 60 years old, is one such tree. Cultivated as a bonsai for 40 years by an esteemed Italian bonsai artist, it became part of our collection last year, along with nine other trees of the same remarkable age and refinement.

This Pyracantha is a tree of ever-changing elegance. As an evergreen, it remains full of life throughout the year, yet its appearance shifts with the seasons. In spring, it bursts into delicate white flowers, while autumn adorns its branches with vibrant orange berries, creating a striking contrast against its deep green foliage.

Structurally, it is a powerful bonsai. Its thick, aged trunk speaks of decades of careful cultivation, while its first branch—impressively thick—adds a commanding presence to its form. Originally housed in a plastic training container, this year marked a new chapter for the tree as we repotted it into a brown/grey gres ceramic pot, a fitting home for the years ahead.

The journey of this tree is far from over. To refine its silhouette, we plan to air-layer the top, transforming the upper canopy into a mame bonsai, while slightly lowering the first branch to perfect its balance. This Pyracantha is a living testament to the art of bonsai, evolving with time yet always maintaining its deep-rooted legacy.
