I received this tree in 1986. It was a young plant that had been grown from seed five years earlier. Before long, I realized how well pomegranate lends itself to bonsai techniques.
It grows vigorously throughout the summer and produces many new buds even on old wood, providing plenty of material for shaping.
In the early years, I decided to develop it into a free-standing deciduous tree, similar to those found in urban environments: a tree with a short trunk and long, gracefully spreading main branches.
I paid close attention to achieving a harmonious arrangement of the primary branches that form the framework of the tree.
In 2006, the tree was placed in a temporary shallow pot. In 2019, it was finally repotted into what is now its permanent container — a pot I crafted myself in my workshop.
Both the shape and the glaze were designed specifically for this tree. My goal was to create a very shallow pot that subtly suggests openness and spacious surroundings.
Throughout the year, the tree is continuously evaluated from a design perspective. Branches that may become too thick must be removed early.
I have never used wire on this tree. Branches that need to be repositioned are tied together or pulled apart using string.
