This Ficus microcarpa, commonly known as the Australian Ficus, has been cultivated from a cutting since 2010 and is now 15 years old. The mother plant, purchased in 2008, provided the foundation for a tree that would develop both vigorous growth and a striking network of aerial roots, a hallmark of the species.
Inspired by the majestic Ficus benghalensis (Banyan Tree) of India, the artist aimed to evoke the grandeur and character of the Banyan in miniature form. The development began in a broom style, gradually refined over the years into a classical bonsai composition, balancing naturalistic growth with careful design to create a harmonious and elegant silhouette.
The tree currently measures 61 cm in height, with a nebari width of 13 cm, and is planted in a container measuring 41 × 25 × 7.5 cm. The pot’s proportions complement the expansive root structure and emerging aerial roots, providing stability while highlighting the tree’s dramatic form.
This Ficus exemplifies patient cultivation, thoughtful styling, and the unique ability of tropical species to be transformed into refined bonsai. The composition captures both the vitality of the microcarpa species and the artistry of a self-taught bonsai artist, presenting a miniature tree with the grandeur and spirit of a banyan.
