Jita n.3 – “Venetian Briccola”

Description

This jita by Italian artist Disciplina Bonsai carries a material history unlike any other, rooted in the waters and time of Venice.

The piece is made from a section of briccola wood—the wooden poles that have supported the Venetian lagoon for centuries, marking navigation channels and standing partially submerged for decades. Exposed continuously to water, tides, and microorganisms, the wood undergoes a natural transformation that cannot be replicated.

Over time, a marine pest slowly eats into the submerged portions of the briccola, leaving behind a surface covered in small, round holes. Rather than weakening the piece, this process gives the wood an extraordinary texture and visual rhythm, making each jita completely unique. No two surfaces can ever be the same.

The section used for this jita is approximately 1 cm thick and retains the natural color of the wood, untouched by artificial finishes. What remains is a raw, honest fragment of Venice itself—shaped not only by human use, but by water, time, and life in the lagoon.

Designed to accompany a bonsai with subtle presence, this jita adds depth and narrative without distraction, offering a surface that speaks quietly of place, endurance, and transformation.
